Veta (Zumwalt) Smith

Veta Smith, age 92 passed away peacefully on Monday, August 19, 2019. Born February 5, 1927 in Portis, KS. Veta was raised in Downs, KS by her parents, Ray and Florence Zumwalt and graduated from Downs High School.

She married Harold G. Smith on November 10, 1945. To this union five children were born. Veta and Harold raised their family in Beloit, KS where they were members of the St. John The Baptist Catholic Church.

Veta was primarily a homemaker, but also worked part-time at the Mainliner Restaurant and St. John’s High School.
After retiring, the couple moved to Glen Elder where they lived until Harold passed in 2003. They were happily married for 58 years.

Veta moved to the Kansas City area in 2004 to be closer to her daughter, Anita. She lived in a retirement community where she enjoyed the activities and camaraderie.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold and her son, Steven.

Veta is survived by her four daughters, Karen Arnett, Wichita, KS.  Linda Walline and husband, Mike, Montrose, CO. Anita Evans and husband, Steve, Overland Park, KS. Pam Smith and husband, Michael Giallombardo, Colorado Springs, CO.. She also leaves behind eight grandchildren, Barry Hesslund, Missy Geiken, Jason Arnett, Justin Arnett, Kelly McQueen, Christopher Keen, Kristen Dieter, and Andy Giallombardo and their families.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, August 29th at the funeral home with rosary services beginning at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church at 10 a.m., Friday August 30th. Interment will follow at St. John's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be given to the Port Library in Beloit, Ks. Veta was an avid reader and enjoyed novels, biographies, and poetry.
